In this training course, we show how open access, high-resolution online collections – that is, objects in the public domain – facilitate the teaching, study and research of collections, as well as being an excellent promotion tool for museums. Open access is also a prerequisite for the inclusion of content on the Wikipedia and Europeana platforms.
In this course, we present the tools available and best practices necessary for museums to make their collections available online. We discuss the results observed in museums that follow an open access policy. We also talk about objects that are not in the public domain and have various intellectual property statutes, which should be identified.
